FLORA DEPOT RESTORATION PROJECT
|
The Flora Depot was built in 1908 by the Vandalia Railroad (Pennsylvania Railroad). In 1969, it was moved from its original location to a site on South Sycamore Street and converted into a Laundromat. In 2003 it was damaged in a fire and sat empty and neglected for many years. In spite of its condition it was ranked a Notable example of transportation architecture by Indiana Landmarks and the Department of Natural Resources in their 2011 survey of historic sites and structures. Much of the historic fabric remained.
In 2013 the depot was in danger of being demolished as part of site development. Thanks to the efforts of the Town of Flora, Flora Main Street, and a crew of volunteers, the building was deconstructed and stored in a town maintenance building. Grants from the Carroll County Community Foundation and Indiana Landmarks provided funding for a restoration plan. Here is the story of the Flora Depot: the history and plans for the future. We are working to ensure the story continues for years to come! |
